What is a Professional Learning Community?

A Professional Learning Community is a collaborative culture with a primary purpose of learning that focuses on results-orientated curriculum, assessment, and instruction.

Who is involved in a Professional Learning Community?

The principal, teachers, support staff, parents, and students work together to ensure student success.

How does a Professional Learning Community work?

– There is a school-wide focus on high levels of learning.

– Members of the Professional Learning Community work together as a team.

– Student work is assessed so that our school continues to improve.

– Student Progress Meetings are held four times a year to look at individual student’s progress.

– Grade level meetings are held monthly so that teachers can review student progress and make instructional goals and interventions.

How does a Professional Learning Community promote continuous improvement?

The following key questions guide the work of the Professional Learning Community:

– What is it we expect our students to learn?

– How will we know when they have learned it?

– How will we respond when they don’t learn it?

– How will we respond when they already know it?

What are some additional strategies that Stevenson Elementary School uses to ensure student success?

School has a Problem Solving Team that meets regularly to look at individual students who may be having academic or behavior problems. This team looks at information from the teacher, student work, and/or student observations to suggest strategies and interventions to help students become successful.
